TORRENTIAL FLOODS DESTROY HOMES
La Saline is a village close to the market town of Camp Perrin in the south of Haiti. In September 2003, torrential rains associated with Hurricane Lili caused disastrous flooding. Houses were lost on both sides of the river, prompting the 30 families living in La Saline to relocate their village.

Once the families involved had decided to relocate, ORE and another local organization called AJEC, joined forces in seeking support for the move. In the spring of 2003, CARITAS provided the funds required to purchase a property at Laroche suitable for a new village. The scene was set for rebuilding a better future.

DESIGNING A NEW VILLAGE
A team gradually evolved to design a village offering the best climatic, social and environmental conditions possible. Eric Davenport, an American architect, and David Doherty, a Peace Corps Volunteer worked for several months with the local community. They were later joined by Frederique Mangones, a renowned Haitian architect, and engineer Frantz Severe of ORE draw to the challenge of designing low-cost housing adapted to Haitian rural family activities. In the fall of 2003, a team of permiculturalists also offered their expertise to the village project.

Today the team is working with the community to resolve the following major issues:

- Low cost relief from floods
- Waste management & recycling to protect the environment
- Hygienic toilets to improve family health
- Community center to bring people together
- Privacy to reduce stress within families
- Green spaces to enhance quality of life
- Fruit trees to generate income
- Utilizing daily wind patterns, heat and cooling cycles
- Covenants to protect their community

THE NEXT STEP
ORE is working with the design team to solicite support for the progress of the village relocation. We are currently looking for technical assistance to develop cost-effective materials and building techniques, development funds to construct a prototype house and support for grants and low-cost financing to complete the reconstruction process.
